Surrey SEN School

Archadia have delivered several projects, involving remodelling, refurbishments and new extensions for a school in Surrey providing residential and educational facilities for children with learning difficulties and challenging behaviour.

As the site sits in the Green Belt, careful negotiations had to be carried out with the planners to arrive at acceptable designs.

As part of this, the school wants to upgrade their aqua-therapy facilities and a new pool is required.

Our approach is to provide a double height space connecting the existing school and the proposed extension bringing in light that diffuses through the space, minimising reflective surfaces and creating good lines of sight. All facilities for the young adults have been positioned at ground floor to keep a direct connection with the school whilst staffing areas are at first floor level. The young adult facility will be located to the rear adjacent to the sensory gardens to give a connection with nature. Currently on site, this new facility is expected to be in use by late September.

The new and improved facilities will allow the school to deliver high quality care and education in an attractive and safe environment and has greatly enhanced the site.
